EE Game Mode

Security concerns? Potential Scam?

See it advertised on the TV just now and instantly thought what a load of testicles. It looks like a third party QoS which the way is advertised has questionable benefits and questionable advertising ethics.

Isn’t this like setting a priority device in Google WiFi for an hour or 8 hours?

No loss of security, just focuses on the device for a set amount of time for better performance, everything else still works as it should.

Yes. QoS and Traffic Control settings are present on most routers but often hidden on ISP ones although useful in certain circumstances. All EE have done is enabled it in a user friendly/marketing way.

How do they pull this off though? 👇

Code:
Connect to the best gaming servers
Geo Filter chooses the best quality servers to avoid lag for smoother online gaming.

Netduma

I had assumed basic QoS with unique MAC address path bypassing their normal network management but interested if it also includes software.

It can't be that, unless that phrase is 100% bullsh*t, then it intimates to some sort of routing or BGP optimisation, giving you lower latency paths to game servers (also assumes EE somehow knows all the IP space for all the game servers).
So this would be something happening in the EE core network, not at the edge device (CPE, their wifi router etc).

Reading between the lines it appears to be a combination of
  • Device QoS prioritisation on the router
  • A prioritised/optimised network path
  • A game supported by Netduma
Will not work on VPN obviously (and 4G Hybrid)
Warnings that it will impact if more than one user on slow Broadband products
Only works with games listed and you should post on NETDUMA's support forum and ask to add your game. WiFi Enhancer is powered and supported by NETDUMA.
However even if your game is not featured, you will still benefit by boosting Game Mode as all gaming traffic will be prioritised on your network.

Marketing is EE Gaming platform open to all but really you need EE Full Fibre.

I'm planning to launch a "WiFi Enhancer" product myself, it's called plugging the console/computer into your router via a cable (y). That will be £10 extra a month please.

afaik it's basically fq_codel for smart queue management for wifi and ethernet and then they have a geo filter where you can select which servers you connect to based on how close they are.

It's not that great as say on Overwatch 2 for example if you block the european servers in germany and strictly go for UK servers, if you play competitive you can't select which server and you get kicked.

Not trying tk highjack this thread but im getting 28ms to frankfurt from Carmarthen anyone got ideas on how to potentially lower it even a little

What isp and what type of connection? What ping do you get to London?

You realise that too low of a latency also has negative impact on most games right?

Games servers will add delay to low latency connections to make latency match higher ones to keep games running in sync.

If latency is stable and consistent this is all you'll want.

Always hated this feature on quake3, tremulous etc servers back in the day, they were calling it "unlagged" and it was really taking from the experience, but allowed some poor sod from far away to sort of be able to play. Hopefully the feature improved a lot since.. #old

That would have been me on my 56k Diamond Supra Express and sub 200ms pings instagib or bouncing around on quake 3 fortress.

Miss those days 😔

Indeed, the "unlagged" feature in games like Quake 3 and Tremulous aimed to mitigate lag for players at the expense of some gaming experience. Over time, networking technologies have advanced, and game developers have refined these features to strike a better balance between accommodating players from various locations and maintaining fair gameplay. It's a classic topic from the old gaming days! 🎮 #nostalgia
